2017 Video Scouting Internship

Position Overview

BIS is looking for highly motivated individuals with a desire to work in the baseball industry. Video Scouts will have a chance to make an immediate impression on the company. Each Video Scout will be collecting data that is directly used by BIS clients (including major league teams) for advance scouting and evaluation purposes. Not only will the Video Scouts become more familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of hundreds of amateur and professional players, but they will also learn about the ins and outs of the baseball statistics industry.

Former Video Scouts have risen rapidly through Major League front offices after getting their start watching two to three games per day at BIS. In the words of one former Video Scout and current Vice President of Baseball Operations, “My summer at BIS was the best baseball experience of my life.” Major League teams frequently come to us for recommendations when they need to fill a position within their organization, and our top video scouts each year routinely land team internships and/or full-time jobs.

Responsibilities:

  • Score and pitch chart MLB, MiLB and amateur games using specialized computer software

  • Check the accuracy and validity of data

  • Prepare and analyze statistical data for delivery to customers

  • Assist with the production of the 2018 Bill James Handbook

  • Provide administrative support to the full-time staff

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of baseball and baseball scorekeeping

  • Ability to identify and differentiate between pitch types

  • Computer proficiency and the ability to quickly learn new software

  • High attention to detail

  • High school, college, or professional baseball playing experience is preferred

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends

  • Must be able to work out of our Coplay, PA office

  • Enrolled in or graduated from an accredited college or university

Time Frame:

  • BIS offers two unique start dates for this position. The first begins February 6th, 2017. It will last for a period of five months, with the possibility of extending further based on the Video Scout’s performance. The second begins on March 13th, 2017. This will last five to six months, again with a possibility of extending longer.

Compensation:

  • A starting base hourly rate of $7.75 and/or college course credit will be offered to each Video Scout

  • Each Video Scout will also be eligible for regular raises based on performance

  • There will also be opportunities to sign up to work overtime to earn extra income (opportunities will depend on work levels throughout the year)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Focus:

  • Assist in the execution of game day duties including, but not limited to: assisting with pregame and in-game ceremonies and promotions, assisting with the load-in and load-out of ballpark entertainment, escorting mascots and staffing the Consumer Clubs, Fan Zone Carnival Games and Reds Authentics locations. Pregame activities include, but are not limited to: escorting ceremonies, first pitches, national anthem performers, honor guards, game ball deliveries, captains of the game and the Reds Heads Run-On. In-game activities include, but are not limited to: executing “Play Ball” Kid, Cincinnati Bell Hometown Hero, Skyline Chili Shuffle and Skyline Step Up to the Mic (additional sponsor related promotions may be added as the season approaches). Other tasks may include assisting with fan giveaways and prize redemptions, helping with special promotions, as well as additional escort duties when special guests are present.
  • Assist Corporate Sales Fulfillment with tracking sponsor media and tickets and providing assistance with Corporate Sales events and proof of performance packages. Events include, but are not limited to: Corporate Sales Golf Outing, Corporate Batting Practices and Sponsorship Games, Batting Practice Viewings and other sponsor-related events.

Other Areas of Responsibility:

  • Assist with the Reds Rover field-marketing program throughout the season at various events including, but not limited to: set-up and breakdown, handing out team information, promoting team initiatives and other promotional items, working with the team mascots and other Reds staff on an event-by-event basis, conducting field promotions and register-to-win contests and cooperating with Reds fans of all ages
  • Assist with Reds events during the season including, but not limited to: Opening Day Block Party, Kids Opening Day Block Party, Redlegs Run, Bark in the Park, Reds Racing Night, Season Ticket Members events and concerts.
  • Assist Consumer Clubs with all events including but not limited to: Reds Heads Kids Club player autograph, Q&A run-the-bases sessions; Reds Rookies player photograph sessions and pre-game parades; Club Red parties
  • Assist Fan Zone Carnival Games with duties including but not limited to: delivering top-notch customer service to all fans including answering questions and resolving issues, fully understanding the rules and prizes associated with each game and be able to explain them to participants, handling cash transactions and keeping games and displays organized, neat, and clean at all times
  • Assist Reds Authentics with duties including but not limited to: item inventory and distribution.
  • Participate as a coach with the Reds Rookie Success League for four (4) weeks in June 2017

Qualifications:

  • Staff members should have prior work experience in at least one business setting and one sports setting
  • Staff members should be interested in going into sports business and should have or are pursuing an undergrad/graduate degree in a related area of study

Requirements:

  • Must have an available schedule that will allow the ability to work nights, weekends and holidays during the time period of March 13, 2017 – October 2017
  • Must present self in a professional manner to interact with fans of all ages, sponsors, guests and on occasion, players
  • Must have the ability to handle and coordinate large groups of people in a secure and sensitive area
  • Must be an energetic self-starter with an outgoing personality and be customer-service driven
  • Must have a general knowledge of baseball
  • Must have valid driver’s license with clean driving record

Primary Focus:

  • Assist in preparation for the 2017 season, managing the Reds Rover and handling general administrative duties.
  • Game day preparation responsibilities include, but are not limited to: putting together all forms and supplies needed for each promotion, following up on game day winners, assisting with the scoreboard messages and scoreboard memories processes, assisting with entertainment for special games, managing Fan Appreciation Day and assisting with Kroger Fan Zone entertainment.  
  • Managing the Reds Rover includes, but is not limited to: researching events to attend, being proactive in scheduling appearances, driving the marketing vehicle throughout the area to various events while managing set-up and breakdown, handing out team information, promoting team initiatives and other promotional items; working with the team mascot(s) and other Reds staff on event-by-event basis; conducting field promotions and register-to-win contests, working with Reds fans of all ages; fulfilling prize distribution after events, coordinating tickets and mailings to contest winners; sending out post-event questionnaires to compile feedback and research; assisting in design and content of Reds Rover homepage on Cincinnati Reds website; maintaining vehicle with regular service checks.
  • Assist Corporate Sales Fulfillment with tracking sponsor media and tickets and providing assistance with Corporate Sales events and proof of performance packages. The Cincinnati Reds Ticketing Department is seeking several dedicated and team oriented individuals to fill a variety of game day roles within the department. Interns will partner and assist Customer Service and Consumer Club staff to meet and exceed sales and customer service expectations. The internships available are game day positions starting in March 2017.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing an exceptional experience for every guest that visits Great American Ball Park through various contact points
  • Be knowledgeable of all aspects of ticketing packages and Consumer Club memberships
  • Execute sales inside the ballpark on game days
  • Take accurate information and payment for each sale
  • Organize, clean, and adequately stock designated locations in the ballpark
  • Assist with the execution of events
  • Assist in guest services, VIP Ticket Concierge, or point of sale location inside the ballpark
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills, provide excellent customer service, and be able to resolve guest issues in real time
  • Must be attentive to guests’ needs, have full knowledge of all policies, services, and facility locations.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Currently pursuing, or have achieved, an undergraduate or graduate degree in Sports Management, Business or related field preferred
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Good grammar, voice and diction

Job Title:       Ticket Department Internship

Reports To:    Manager of: Season, Premium, Group or Single Game Sales Departments

FLSA:            Hourly, Non-Exempt

The Cincinnati Reds Ticketing Department  is seeking several dedicated and team oriented individuals to fill a variety of roles within the department. Positions available are for individuals looking to gain experience working in professional sports in the areas of customer service and sales. Interns will partner and assist sales and service staff to meet and exceed sales and customer service expectations. The internships available start run from March 2017 – September 2017.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working on a computerized ticketing system.
  • Generate reports from ticketing system and Microsoft Excel.
  • Answer phones and respond to emails.
  • Mail ticket orders and product information.
  • Provide a high level of service for Ticketing and Consumer Club accounts.
  • Assist with planning and staffing of events.
  • Game day duties: perform in-seat visits, assist with guest services, and staff VIP Ticket concierge.
  • Be knowledgeable of all aspects of the Ticketing packages and Consumer Clubs memberships.
  • Keep Ticketing and Consumer Clubs locations in the ballpark clean, organized, and adequately stocked.
  • Track and record daily sales and payments.

Summary:

Contribute to the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals Spring Training Operations for the 2017 season as one of our highly valued interns. Corporate Partnerships
The Corporate Partnerships Intern will assist the Corporate Sales and Partnership Department in ensuring adherence to sponsor contract provisions, including monitoring merchandise inventory, execution of promotions and planning/execution of special events, which includes game day responsibilities; act as a sponsor contact responding and fulfilling any request made by the sponsor; maintain records for all sponsor activities, tasks and accomplishments; assist Corporate Partnerships with assembling client presentations; and assist with general operation of the Corporate Partnerships Department. Intermediate working knowledge of PowerPoint and previous experience with Photoshop is a plus.

Marketing
The Marketing Intern will assist with the implementation of promotion set-up and game day promotion preparation, distribution, and coordination; assist in coordinating media promotions with local radio, TV and print outlets participating on-site; support Marketing staff with administrative duties; take lead on prize distribution coordination and fulfillment; actively participate in the creative development process.

Stadium/Ballpark Operations

Summary:

The Nationals Youth Baseball Academy is a 501(c)3 organization that uses the sports of baseball and softball to foster character development, academic achievement and improved health among youth from underserved communities in Washington DC. The Academy seeks a dedicated intern to assist with the continued build out of its development operations.

The right candidate will have an interest in advancement, non-profit management, project design and proposal / grant writing, and prospect research, outreach and communications. As the Academy is a relatively new venture, so too are the development operations of the Academy -- the intern will be part of a team putting together new systems, processes and policies that enhance the ability of the Academy to communicate its story to potential supporters and secure resources in support of its mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of a prospect management database, including tracking outreach / communication to existing and potential funders.

  • Generating letters, newsletters, updates, etc for supporter audiences and assist with distribution of those communication to key audiences.

2017 Internship, Player Development - Washington Nationals (West Palm Beach, FL)

Summary:

Contribute to Washington Nationals Baseball Operations for the 2017 season as one of our highly valued interns. We’re looking for dynamic individuals who can contribute to our Player Development operation in our first season at the new complex in West Palm Beach, Florida. The internship runs from February 1st through November 1st, and will include exposure to Spring Training, Extended Spring Training, Gulf Coast League, and Instructional League. The position will work closely with Player Development executives, Minor League coaching staff, and professional baseball players. Decisions regarding the position will not be made until the Fall and Winter of 2016 and applicants being considered should not expect to be contacted before the end of the 2016 baseball season

The Player Development internship includes an emphasis on assignments related to the Nationals farm system and development of professional players. We value candidates with playing experience, familiarity with minor league baseball, and/or Spanish language skills.

Summary:

This position, reporting to the Coordinator, Authentics, will work directly with the Nationals Authentics program. The position will be responsible for the end-to-end Authentics Auctions program, run through Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM).
