Job Position:         Coordinator, Language Education and Cultural Assimilation        Status:  Full-Time

Location:               Clearwater, FL

Department:        Player Development

Reports to:           Assistant Director, International Operations; Director, Minor League Operations and Director, Player Development

Supervises:           Language Instructions; HS equivalent program Instructors; Seminars & Workshops for Instructors in USA, Dominican Republic and Venezuela

 

Position Overview:

  • The CLECA will work with both Major and Minor League players to ensure that all non-English speaking players (NES) are provided with effective ESL (English as a second language) services to maximize their potential.

  • The CLECA will work toward creating an all-inclusive environment/program within our system.  One that promotes cohesiveness between different cultures.

  • The CLECA will evaluate objectively The Phillies’ current ESL/Education program and make recommendations immediately based on his/her findings.

  • The CLECA will supervise and develop all contracted instructors; supervise all language classes, teach English when needed; and maintain all student records.

  • The CLECA will be given complete autonomy to work toward establishing a program that is creative and innovative.

  • The CLECA will create an organization wide language and acculturation curriculum tailored for baseball players.  This curriculum will include cultural transition as well.

  • THE CLECA will also supervise, develop and modify if necessary, the following educational programs:  language programs, HS diploma (CENAPEC) or GED in US, trade school if needed, and college programs.

  • THE CLECA will act as liaison between MLB, other organizations, staff, players and families with regards to education.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Primary):

 

  1. Coordinate language instruction throughout Major and Minor Leagues through instructors or technology based program.

  2. Supervise and monitor highly qualified contracted instructors to teach Spanish and/or English in the US, DR and VZ.

  3. Maintain regular supervision of all instructors and players in the classrooms.

  4. Provide teaching tools and techniques to our language instructors in US, DR and VZ.

  5. Create schedules of classes throughout the year and make sure the locations are suitable for instruction.

  6. Accompany students/players on field trips and participate in community events.

  7. Evaluate and create individual plans for each player and track their progress.

  8. Evaluate, select, purchase and maintain an inventory of educational materials/resources needed to provide an adequate teaching environment where instructions are given.

  9. Organize the Language & Acculturation program budget and make recommendations based on the program’s needs.

  10. Create transitional programs for all foreign players.

  11. Travel to affiliates and the Latin America academies regularly to ensure players are adapting to the US culture and that all programs are operating effectively.

  12. Help facilitate the continued education for all American and foreign players.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities (Secondary):

 

  1. Translate documents English to Spanish; Spanish to English

  2. Other educational projects as assigned by supervisor

  3. Cultural seminar series for players and staff in the US and Latin America

 

Qualifications (Required):

  • Must be based out of Clearwater, FL

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Education

  • Must be able to read, write and speak Spanish fluently

  • 3-5 years of prior related experience

  • Extensive teaching experience as a teacher in a classroom setting

  • Knowledge of other languages and passion for teaching (desired)

Other Requirements:

  • Must have knowledge of the game of baseball

  • Ability to work irregular hours to meet needs of staff and students

  • Travel to affiliated teams in the US and to the Dominican Republic

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • High level of demonstrated honesty and integrity

  • High level of professionalism

  • Demonstrated understanding of the confidential and sensitive nature of the role

  • High levels of energy and enthusiasm

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional lifting of items weighing approximately 20 lbs.
